An original take on fascism and the affective regime of "reaction," taking Trump as a springboard for far-reaching philosophical reflections
What is fascism today, in our social media world? How does Donald Trump's political persona feed tendencies toward it? What new concepts do we need to grapple with its unique contemporary incarnations? This book takes Trump as a jumping off point to rethink fascism and its preparatory tendencies.

Existing theories revolve around the identification of the "masses" to a charismatic leader, opposing the mass's "delusions" to business-as-usual "rational" politics. However, in today's micro-segmented social media environment, the "masses" no longer exist, and politics is any but business as usual. Far from being duped into movements fueling fascism, people positively desire them. They exuberantly participate in an affective regime that is not the opposite of rationality, but constitutes its own anomalous form of it, and even fosters a certain intellectuality expressed in the exegeses of conspiracy thinking. "Reaction" sums up this affective regime in a single word.

This book is a political treatise on the cultural conditions of fascism, combined with a philosophical treatise on becoming reactionary as a collective process. The philosophical inquiry requires reconsidering the very concept of the person, and inquiring into what collective personhood might mean. This can only be done by advancing nothing less than an alternative political logic.

Brian Massumi's work spans the philosophy of perception and experience; art, architecture, and aesthetics; theories of power; and the theory of contemporary capitalism. He is widely known for his role in introducing the thought of Deleuze and Guattari to the English-speaking world through his translation of their magnum opus, A Thousand Plateaus, and as the author of one of the earliest English-language monographs dedicated to their work, A User's Guide to Capitalism and Schizophrenia. The essays collected in Parables for the Virtual are widely considered one of the main inspirations behind the academic area of affect studies. Parables, along with Semblance and Event, also helped spearhead the contemporary rediscovery of Whitehead's process philosophy. Massumi collaborated for twenty years with the SenseLab, a collaborative research and learning environment, operating between art, philosophy, and activism according to a model of dynamic self-organization, has been a major international influence in the area of "research-creation." The SenseLab has morphed the 3Ecologies Project. Activities alternate between land-based, urban, and online events and encounters, with philosophical reading groups serving as an incubator for projects. SenseLab experimentations are recounted in Thought in the Act (with SenseLab founder Erin Manning) and 99 Theses for the Revaluation of Value.
