The Revolution of Buddhist Modernism

Reacting to nineteenth-century forces of colonialism and globalization, Buddhist reformers across Asia strove to modernize Buddhist teachings, practices, and institutions. "Buddhist modernism" was typically characterized by disbelief in the supernatural, rejection of ritual, deinstitutionalization, and egalitarianism.
