Die interdisziplinäre kulturwissenschaftliche und naturwissenschaftliche Untersuchung von Landschaftsgeschichte und Besiedlungsgeschichte kann im Gebiet entlang der südlichen Nordseeküste auf eine besonders lange Forschungstradition zurückblicken. Vor allem die in den weit verbreiteten Feuchtböden gut erhaltenen Funde aus organischen Materialien liefern viele Erkenntnisse über die sich immer wieder ändernde Umwelt im Küstenraum und die Lebensbedingungen der Menschen vergangener Zeiten. Sowohl Neubearbeitungen alter Ausgrabungen als auch durch große Baumaßnahmen ausgelöste neue Untersuchungen haben den Kenntnisstand inzwischen deutlich erweitert. Ziel dieses EU-geförderten deutsch-niederländischen Kolloquiums 2011 in Aurich war es daher, eine Bilanz der aktuellen Situation zu ziehen und dabei die eingesetzten Methoden und erzielten Ergebnisse interdisziplinär zu diskutieren. Der vorliegende Band enthält 21 der gehaltenen Vorträge. Sie reichen inhaltlich vom durch Meeresspiegelschwankungen geprägten Naturraum über Ausgrabungen vom Mesolithikum bis zur frühen Neuzeit sowie Haustierhaltung bis zur Vermittlung erzielter historischer Ergebnisse.

The interdisciplinary cultural and scientific investigation of the history of landscape and settlement development has a particularly long tradition along the southern coast of the North Sea. Especially in the wide-spread marshlands, well-preserved finds made of organic materials have provided a great deal of information about the constantly changing environment in the coastal area and the living conditions of the people who settled there in the past. Both the re-analysis of earlier excavations and new investigations undertaken as a result of large construction projects have meanwhile greatly increased the extent of our knowledge. Therefore the aim of this EU-sponsored German/Dutch colloquium entitled “Current Archaeological Research along the Southern Coast of the North Sea: Methods - Strategies - Projects” was to take stock of the present situation and discuss the methods employed and the results obtained on an interdisciplinary basis. This volume consists of 21 papers presented at Aurich, on topics ranging from the influence of sea-level changes on the landscape to excavations of Mesolithic to Early Modern sites and from animal husbandry to the communication of historical conclusions.
