Study of the religious tradition of repeating or singing a sacred name
Throughout the world, and encompassing all of the great religious traditions, repeating or singing a sacred name is a fundamental spiritual practice. For millions of people, whether Christian, Muslim, Buddhist, or Hindu, invoking a sacred name is an integral part of prayer and daily life.

This collection of writings by renowned Indian scholar, V. Raghavan, examines the lives and contributions of the main exponents of the tradition in India, including Mahatma Gandhi, and Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism.

V. Raghavan (1908-1979) was an Indian scholar and custodian of traditional Indian culture for much of the twentieth century. The author of over 120 books, Raghavan was the secretary of the Music Academy, Madras, from 1944 until his death in 1979. William J. Jackson is Professor Emeritus at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), where he taught courses in Comparative Religion.
