Sarcopenia describes the age-related decline in skeletal muscle mass and function which leads to increased disability and loss of independence in older adults, and can be considered a component of frailty, which is similarly an age-related syndrome characterized by declines in multiple physical and psychosocial factors that result in reduced resilience to stressors.Sarcopenia and Frailty: A Guide to Screening, Diagnosis, Prevention and Treatment is a handbook that provides readers with an understanding of the current operational definitions of sarcopenia and frailty, and easy-to-follow instructions for performing and interpreting the necessary assessments to screen and diagnose both conditions. It also provides advice on the latest evidence related to treatment strategies for patients diagnosed with (or at increased risk of) sarcopenia and/or frailty, with a focus on prescribing exercise and nutrition interventions. This book is a valuable resource for researchers and clinicians who need to understand more the standardized approaches to performing and interpreting screenings and diagnosing and treating sarcopenia and frailty in older individuals.

Dr. David Scott is an Associate Professor and exercise scientist at the Institute of Physical Activity and Nutrition at Deakin University, Australia. His research interests focus on the effects of age-related changes in body composition and physical function on disability and longevity, and the roles of exercise and nutrition in preventing functional decline in older adults. He has expertise in objective assessments of physical function and imaging techniques for quantifying muscle mass and quality. He has published over 140 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters. In 2017, Dr. Scott was appointed as Chair of the Australian and New Zealand Society of Sarcopenia and Frailty Research (ANZSSFR) Task Force on Diagnostic Criteria for Sarcopenia. The goal of this Task Force is to achieve consensus on appropriate operational definitions and measurement techniques for sarcopenia, the age-related decline in muscle mass and function, and promote these to ensure increased attention to sarcopenia in research and clinical settings. He regularly presents to clinicians and community groups on diagnosis and treatment strategies for sarcopenia. Dr Elsa Dent is a NHMRC (National Health and Medical Research Council) Early Career Research Fellow at Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute, Torrens University, and an adjunct lecturer in the School of Population Health at the University of Adelaide. She completed a PhD in Geriatric Medicine from the University of Adelaide. In 2017, she was appointed a member of the World Health Organization's Clinical Consortium on Healthy Ageing (CCHA). Her major areas of research include frailty, sarcopenia and integrated models of care for older adults. Dr Robin M. Daly is Professor and Chair in Exercise and Ageing at Deakin University, Australia. He has over 20 years of experience in conducting human clinical, public health and translational intervention trials to evaluate the role of exercise and nutrition for preventing and managing common chronic diseases such as osteoporosis, sarcopenia, falls, type 2 diabetes, certain types of cancer as well as cognitive related disorders. He has been an active contributor nationally and internationally to clinical guidelines in the area of exercise, calcium and vitamin D for osteoporosis and fracture prevention. He is a council member of the Australian and New Zealand Bone and Mineral Society (ANZBMS) and the Australian and New Zealand Society for Sarcopenia and Frailty Research (ANZSFR).
