This book covers the present and future of bioethanol biorefinery technologies. It discusses the efficient use of feedstock in bioethanol production, and critically reviews the environmental sustainability of bioethanol production. In addition, it describes the integrated production of bioelectricity, biopolymers, organic acids, and other biomolecules, as well as the use of process-related liquid and solid byproducts and/or wastes during bioethanol generation.

Since the bioethanol industry has also led the automotive industry to explore new avenues, this book summarizes the various aspects of ethanol motorization, hybrid engine development, and biofuel electrification.

For decades, clean and renewable alternatives have been sought to reduce dependence on petroleum-based fossil fuels and CO2 emissions. Bioethanol appears as one of the best solutions for the production of biofuels, bioenergy and biochemicals, along with the establishment of new biorefinery concepts and a circular bioeconomy. Therefore, the ideas and technologies presented in this book contribute to the UN Sustainable Development Goal 7: Affordable and Clean Energy.

This book is a useful reference for postgraduate students and researchers interested in biorefinery and biofuel technologies, both in academia- and commercial laboratories. Early career scientists can use it to fast track into the field. Advanced scientists will find it helpful to gain a broader overview of the field beyond their area of specialization.

Professor Carlos Ricardo Soccol is the research group leader of the Department of Bioprocesses Engineering and Biotechnology (DEBB) at UFPR. Professor Soccol has experience in bioprocesses/biological engineering, industrial biotechnology, green fuels technology, applied microbiology and fermentation technology. He is Professor HDR in Agri-Foods Biotechnology at University of Marseille-France. He was visiting professor at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, Switzerland (2009), University Lille 1-France (2014) and University Blaise Pascal, Clermont Ferrand-France (2015). The research carried out till-date has credited him with 1.345 publications and his research articles have so far been cited more than 32.250 times on Google Scholar (H-index = 85).

Gonçalo Amarante Guimarães Pereira is Full Professor of the Institute of Biology/UNICAMP. He obtained his PhD in Molecular Genetics from the University of Düsseldorf, Germany (1994 - Konrad Adenauer Foundation). He held the position of Director of the Brazilian Bioethanol Science and Technology Laboratory - CTBE from November 2016 to November 2017. In 2011, he was Co-Founder of GranBio and Chief Scientist from November 2012 to October 2016. He is expert of the European Community for BioEconomy and Advisor of the World Economic Forum for Biotechnology. It has 36 patents filed (5 international), 2 of which applied to the productive sector (GranBio S/A) and 3 granted; it has 6 software registrations granted by INPI.

Claude-Gilles Dussap is head of the team 'Chemical Engineering, Applied Thermodynamics and Biosystems' at Institut Pascal (University Clermont Auvergne - CNRS). He has been much involved in the analysis of the relationships, which exist between the physiological responses of microorganisms and bioreactors environment. His domain of expertise covers various aspects of chemical engineering including bioreactors design, modelling, scale-up and control in relation with reactor performances and with the food quality and nutritional properties. The results of these research works have been published in more than 150 papers. He has supervised more than 30 PhD students and 70 MSc lab works.

Luciana Porto de Souza Vandenberghe is Full Professor of the Department of Bioprocess Engineering and Biotechnology, Federal University of Paraná, Curitiba, Brazil. She obtained her PhD degree in Génie de Procédés Industriel - Biotechnologie from Université de Technologie de Compiègne (2000), France. She is a member of the Bioprocess Engineering and Biotechnology Graduation Program at UFPR. Her areas of interest include Bioprocess Engineering & Biotechnology and Industrial Microbiology, with a focus on valorization of solid and liquid agro-industrial products through submerged and solid-state fermentation for biomolecules production including industrial enzymes, organic acids, biofuels, biopolymers and plant growth hormones. She has published 125 papers, 53 book chapters and 23 patents.
