Agricultural animal health care involves proper management and husbandry as well as veterinary care. Proper management is essential for the well-being of animals, the validity and effectiveness of research and teaching activities, and the health and safety of animal care personnel. Sound animal husbandry programs provide systems of care that permit the animals to grow, mature, reproduce, express some species-specific behaviour, and be healthy. Specific operating procedures depend on factors that are unique to individual institutions. Well-trained and motivated personnel can often achieve high-quality animal care with less than ideal physical plants and equipment. Procedures involving animals should be designed and performed with due consideration of their relevance to human or animal health, the advancement of knowledge, or the good of society. This book can be used for undergraduate and postgraduate animal science courses and as a resource book for scientists who work with animals in their research, for university veterinarians, for regulators, and for other working in the related fields.

Ganesh Yadav instructs courses in genetic regulation of livestock immunology and applied poultry and swine breeding and genetics. He also serves as a graduate faculty member in the graduate major programs of animal breeding and genetics, bioinformatics and computational biology, genetics, and immunobiology. Yadav's area of research is molecular genetics and immunogenetics of poultry, including the identification of molecular markers and genes controlling bacterial resistance, antibody kinetics, growth, body composition, skeletal integrity and other biological traits; physiological genetics; gene expression; and the major histocompatibility complex genes.
