This text introduces the modern concepts relevant to system engineering design and manufacturing from a 4th Industrial Revolution perspective.

The book surveys the current status and cutting edge in Computer Aided Design and Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAD/CAM). This bridges the gaps between academic research and industry. It consists of seven parts and seventeen chapters that first structure the subject areas and later detail the main topics under consideration. Each part of the book and each chapter contains a prelude guiding the reader in a systematic way to the next part or topic.

The book explains concepts using state-of-the-art teaching methods, using objectives, learning outcomes and review questions. MS PowerPoint Slides and Solution Manual for instructors are available online as well as videos.

Wasim Ahmed Khan

Professor Wasim A. Khan holds a first degree in Mechanical Engineering from NED University of Engineering and Technology, Karachi, Pakistan. He later obtained a Ph.D. degree in Operations Research from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Sheffield, England, UK. He is a life member of the Pakistan Engineering Council. He is also a chartered engineer (CEng) of the Engineering Council, UK, and a fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, UK. Professor Khan was recently elected as a senior member of the Institution of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, USA. He is also a member of the IEEE Computer Society. He has diverse work experience including working with the manufacturing industry, software development for local and overseas clients and teaching production engineering, business, and computer science students. He is currently working as a professor, in the faculty of mechanical engineering, at GIK Institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology. He has two books as the principal author by Springer, UK and CRC Press, Taylor and Francis Group, USA. He remained the CRC Press, Taylor and Francis Group, USA Book Series Editor until 2023. So far, he has published four books under his series as the principal editor. The book series theme is 'Computers in Engineering Design and Manufacturing'. Professor Khan has more than 30 journal and conference publications. He also has one US patent application under process. The Pakistan patent for the same invention has been granted. He is a reviewer of several internationally reputed journals including Virtual Reality, Manufacturing Systems, and the International Journal of Computer Integrated Manufacturing. Professor Khan is the founder of the Advance Manufacturing Processes Laboratory (AMPL), Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, GIK Institute. Professor Khan is the principal investigator for two research grants from the Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. His idea in AR/VR also won a grant of considerable amount to a consortium of eight Pakistani and European universities an Erasmus Plus capacity building grant . His current research and development interests include the development of indigenous CNC subtractive and additive manufacturing machine tools, 3D scanners, universal testing machines, spinning machines and flexible manufacturing cells (FMCs), indigenous development of revolute robots and collaborative robots, Digital Twining of manufacturing cells and systems, industrial management of SMEs and LSE for the implementation of Industry 4.0 and Industry 5.0 methodologies using customized manufacturing frameworks; and industrial decision making.

Volkan Esat

Volkan Esat earned his BSc and MSc degrees in Türkiye. He achieved his PhD at the Wolfson School of Mechanical & Manufacturing Engineering of Loughborough University, UK, in 2006. He worked at Loughborough University until 2010. Between 2010-2024, he has been a member of faculty at the Middle East Technical University - Northern Cyprus Campus, Mechanical Engineering Program. He currently works at the University of Hertfordshire, UK, as a member of the faculty in Automotive Engineering. His research interests are metal forming, multi-scale modeling and mechanics of engineering materials, biomechanics, crashworthiness, injury prevention, and computational modelling. So far, he has published more than 70 international journal articles, book chapters, and international conference articles altogether; and filed/granted 2 patents.
