Resilient, Sustainable and Smart Ballasted Railway Track explores the optimization of railway ballast tracks to achieve resilience, sustainability, and intelligence in railway infrastructure. It summarizes and examines new technologies and developments that address unresolved rapid defects in track components: such as rail damage, track stability, ballast flight, and ballast fouling. The book discusses the application of innovative materials derived from waste and recycled railway components, including tyre-derived aggregates, recycled ballast, Neoballast, and polyurethane (often referred to as ballast glue).

Finally, the book examines state-of-the-art structural health monitoring techniques, such as smart sleepers, Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR), ground-penetrating radar, and inspection robots.

Dr Yunlong Guo is MSC Fellow at the Delft University of Technology, Netherlands, and young editorial board member of the “Journal of Railway Science and Engineering” and Guest Editor of “Transportation Geotechnics.” His research focuses on railway geotechnics and railway structure monitoring with cutting-edge methods (DIC, PIV, GPR, image analysis Dr Jing is currently Professor of Highway and Railway Engineering Department at Beijing Jiaotong University, China. He obtained his PhD degree in civil engineering from INSA de Rennes, France. He served as a Vice Director of the State Key Lab of Waterproof for China, and Guest Professor for UMP, Malaysia etc. Professor Jing is currently working on ballasted track, especially recycled and composite materials, with numerical tools DEM and FEM
