This work addresses a number of issues central to biomedical alcohol research. These range from recent advances related to alcoholism in biological and clinical research to specific areas of substantial progress in the study of alcoholism such as the effect of molecular genetic techniques.
The Seventh ISBRA Congress, attracting over 400 participants from 27 countries, was the
first to be held in Australia and addressed a number of issues central to current interests in
biomedical alcohol research. These range from recent advances related to alcoholism in
biological and clinical research to specific areas of substantial progress in the study of
alcoholism in recent years such as the effect of molecular genetic techniques. Included in the
congress was a consideration of the advantages of Australia as a testing ground for the cross-cultural application of new therapeutic approaches. Accordingly, the congress proceedings
published in this volume, from both plenary and symposium presentations, cover a wide range
of topics from the enzymology of alcohol metabolism, genetic studies of alcohol's effects and
the mechanisms of alcohol-related organ damage to fundamental aspects of alcohol's action
and clinical aspects of alcoholism including pharmacological and psychiatric studies. The
material is fully referenced and represents a thoroughly up-to-date account of the key areas in
alcohol research.
