This volume describes flow evolution and the ways in which realizable and stable flow states can be determined. The author also discusses major advances in theory and application of linear and nonlinear flow instability and transition.
Designed for use by researchers and graduate students, this volume presents classical theories of hydrodynamic stability as well as recently established developments in nonlinear stability. Emphasis is placed on results which can be applied to a wide range of areas including aeronautic, chemical, civil, mechanical, environmental and oceanic engineering, geophysics, astrophysics, atmospheric sciences, naval research, oceanography and applied mathematics. The text is divided into two main parts dealing with linear instability and non linear instability and theoretical results are related to those acheived by experimantal, numerical and computational means. Each of the five chapters included ends with a selection of exercises.
