This volume explores the interfaces between the different areas of application of environmental statistics and considers the future applications of methods arising from environmental statistics. Some contributions deal specifically with specialized statistical techniques developed for analyzing environmental data, along with mathematical models designed to integrate large amounts of environmental data into a coherent picture of particular environmental systems. Other contributions examine the problems involved in co-ordinating data collection over large geographical areas and over many dimensions of measurement relevant to environmental issues. Finally, a number of the contributions analyze the problems of formulating specific environmental policies given the nature of the information that has been made available by environmental statistical methods.

In search of spatial extremes - discussion, A. Stein, K.F. Turkman, et al; operational evaluation of air quality models - discussion, P.D. Sampson and P. Guttorp; general discussion I; assessing the human health risk of atmospheric particles, R.L. Smith, J.M. Davis and P. Speckman; Ozone dose mapping and the utility of models - discussion, C.W. Anderson and R.I. Smith; general discussion II; measuring and modelling pollution for risk analysis - discussion, J.V. Zidek and N.D. Lee; a preliminary statistical examination of the effects of uncertainty and variability on environmental regulatory criteria for ozone - discussion, L.H. Cox, P. Guttorp, et al; statistics and environmental policy - case studies from long-term environmental monitoring data - discussion, R. Gouday and G. Laslett; better late than never? injecting statistical know-how into legislation on water quality - discussion, A.E. Warn; general principles III - setting quality standards, principles of sampling; indicator quality for multidisciplinary systems, J.
