Ethno-national and religious identity and violence dominate modern politics, from Northern Ireland to terrorism in Sri Lanka, the former Yugoslavia or Afghanistan and Iraq. This book shows that social theory should be a major tool in helping explain national, religious and identity problems.

JAMES DINGLEY spent over 25 years as a sociologist at the University of Ulster, Northern Ireland, where he specialized in social theory and political sociology, particularly political violence. Living in Northern Ireland, he had first hand experience of talking directly to the military, police and terrorists of both sides. Uniquely, he can combine academic social theory to practical and first hand experience of ethnic/national and religious problems. He has lectured around the world for academic and non-academic audiences and has published in major international academic and trade journals.
