ORGANIC SOURCES OF ENERGY
Publisher Summary
This chapter discusses several research tasks conducted in the field of organic sources of energy. Several of these research tasks are the preparation of the estimates of development costs for trend oil and gas pools expected to be discovered in parts of Canada; the analysis of heavy oil occurrences in the Lloydminster area of Alberta and Saskatchewan for oil and gas potential; oil–water relative permeabilities at low interfacial tensions; etc. The project of contact angle and interfacial tension measurements with reservoir fluids involves the measurements of contact angles and interfacial tensions with reservoir fluids at reservoir temperatures and pressures, as well as at ambient conditions. The objective of the project of the anhydrous recovery of bitumen in a fluidized bed reactor is to examine a method of recovering bitumen from oil sands by direct coking in a fluidized bed reactor.

1.0002 PHASE III, GEOLOGIC, ENVIRONMENTAL, AND RESOURCES STUDY OF THE SOUTH EASTERN SPANISH ZONE AND CONTINENTAL SHELF
P.D. SNAVELY, U.S. Dept. of The Interior, Geological Survey, Menlo Park, California 94025
This project is part III of a cooperative program between the U.S. Geological Survey and its Spanish counterpart ADARO which is designed to provide training and basic geologic information necessary to appraise the resource potential (including sand and gravel, fresh water, heavy mineral placers, oil and gas) and to understand the environmental framework (geologic hazards, coastal erosion, marine pollution, and sediment transport) of the coastal zone of southeastern Spain.
This third phase of the project will concentrate on interpretation and reporting of data collected in phases I and II of the program. Such interpretation will provide guidelines for new directions in geological and marine research along the southeastern coast of Spain.

1.0003 TERRESTRIAL HEAT FLOW IN INDONESIAN OIL FIELDS
V. VACQUIER, Univ. of California, Graduate School, San Diego, California 92037
Prof. Vacquier will use the bottom hole temperatures (BHT) from wells in Sumatra oil fields to obtain the thermal gradient through the sedimentary section. The thermal conductivity will be calculated from measurements made on core and/or electric logs of wells. The thermal gradient times the conductivity equals the heat flow. This value will be useful in understanding the deep tectonic forces at work across S.E. Asia and processes at work forming hydrocarbon accumulation and mobilizing mineral deposits. This work will be carried out in Indonesia using data provided by the Indonesians as well as laboratory and other logistic support.

1.0016 HEAVY OIL RECOVERY
H.Y. LO, Petroleum Recovery Res. Inst., Calgary, Alberta, Canada
Objectives: 1. To examine enhanced recovery methods for recovering viscous oil from Alberta heavy oil deposits and to evaluate influence of major factors. 2. To investigate and develop techniques to improve viscous oil recovery.
In Alberta, besides containing high viscosity oil, many of the heavy oil reservoirs have only thin pay zone thickness and often are underlain by a water zone. Designing and implementing a heavy oil recovery scheme becomes even more difficult and uncertain when there is a lack of relevant information available for consideration. Very little scientific and basic laboratory data can be found in published literature for processes possibly amenable to viscous oil recovery such as steam flooding and in-situ combustion. In view of this, under this project, effort will be put into examining some of the enhanced recovery methods for recovering viscous oil from Alberta heavy oil deposits, to evaluate the influence of various major factors and at the same time to study and, if possible, develop techniques to improve heavy oil recovery.
Steam flooding has been considered a possible method to recover viscous oil. A known characteristic of steam drive is the effect of gravity override. Vertical sweep efficiency depends on several factors such as flow rates, formation thickness, oil viscosity, etc.
Future work: After careful evaluation of available results and information received from persons with experience in the process, a more detailed plan or approach including the type of models, parameters and their range to be selected for the study and the conditions under which the study will be conducted will be prepared. Some immediate effort will be directed to examining the scaling problems and to developing appropriate scaling criteria for the laboratory model studies.
