Maureen McLaughlin is department chair and professor of reading education at East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania. She earned her doctorate at Boston University in reading and language development. Prior to her tenure at the University, Maureen spent fifteen years as a classroom teacher, reading specialist, and department chair in a public school system.   Maureen served as the 2013 – 2014 President of the International Reading Association and was a member of IRA’s Board of Directors from 2005–2008.  During her time on the Board, Maureen was liaison to a variety of committees, including those focused on Bylaws, Adolescent Literacy, and the Common Core State Standards. She also contributed to a variety of documents and position statements, including the Board of Directors’ Code of Conduct and the Conflict of Interest Statement. From 1999 – 2004, Maureen was a volunteer professor in Estonia for the Association’s Reading and Writing for Critical Thinking (RWCT) Project.   Maureen has been a member of several review boards, including those of The Reading Teacher and the Journal of Adolescent and Adult Literacy. She has also published numerous chapters and journal articles focused on critical literacy, reading comprehension, and the Common Core State Standards.
