Traditional upholstery skills are still much in demand both for the making of new furniture and for the re-covering of a treasured antique. The processes involved are lengthy but the results will last a very long time. This book takes the student or home upholsterer on from the most basic skills, gradually building up a working knowledge of the various methods, so that by the finish any type of chair can be tackled with confidence.

The reference section of the book contains an invaluable guide to tools, springs, fillings and fabrics. The projects which follow range from a deep-buttoned stool to a wing chair, each one demonstrated with step-by-step photographs and explained with clear and concise text.

Malcolm Hopkins has had a long career in upholstery and has worked on all types of commissions from domestic furniture to luxury yachts. He is head of the upholstery department at the London Metropolitan University but as well as teaching, he is still also a practising upholsterer. For his services to the industry, he's been made a Fellow of the Association of Master Upholsterers and a Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Upholsterers.
