Captain Alexander Maconochie (1787-1860) was a naval officer, penal reformer, and criminologist whose pioneering ideas on prison reform have had a lasting impact on the criminal justice system. Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, he joined the Royal Navy at a young age and served with distinction.
