Designed for newcomers, this is a guide to inland boating in Great Britain, Ireland and Europe, from getting afloat to boat handling. It addresses issues such as which boat to choose, whether to hire or buy, and where to go, right through to boathandling, manoeuvring, maintenance and repair.
This is a complete guide to inland boating, from getting afloat to boat handling, and it is the only book readers will ever need to take their first steps afloat on the inland waterways. With over 3000 miles of navigable waterways in Great Britain, with more in Ireland and Europe, there is something for everyone, and this book explains how to do it - from which boat to choose, whether to hire or buy, how much it will cost and where to go, right through to boathandling, manoeuvring, maintenance and repair.

Emrhys Barrell has spent a lifetime afloat, for pleasure and for work. He has managed boatyards, designed boats, and edited boating magazines, covering craft from the smallest dinghies to the most exotic luxury yachts. But his greatest passion is for the inland waterways of Great Britain and Europe. From his home alongside the Thames at Goring he looks out over what is possibly the UK's most famous boating river. The family's 48ft narrowboat allows them to travel all the waterways of the connected British system. Emrhys Barrell is currently the Editor of Canal Boat & Inland Waterways.
