This practical guide shows how international eventer, Pippa Funnell - well-known for her ability to get the best out of the youngsters she rides - builds a successful bond with the young horse. Using Pippa's personal experience and specially commissioned photographs of the on-going training of her own horses, every step of the training process is covered, from assessing potential to backing through to the first competition and beyond. Every rider, whatever their discipline, wants a rewarding partnership with their horse, and this book aims to show them how to lay the essential groundwork.
Pippa Funnell started out as a typical ponymad child and as Pippa Nolan, she was a highly successful British under-21 rider, winning the 1987 European Young Rider title. In 2000 she won an Olympic team silver medal and in 2001 she became European champion for the second time. She has earned a reputation for producing good horses out of unproven youngsters. Pippa lives in Surrey, England. Kate Green has been editor of Eventing magazine since 1993, having worked since 1987 for Horse & Hound. Her previous books, all published with David & Charles, are Kiwi Magic (with Andrew Nicholson), Stark Reality (with Ian Stark) and Six of the Best (with Blyth Tait).
