Features 16 routes in the central part of the Peak, from 6 miles to over 40, split into regional sections covering Barlow Vale, Alport Dale, the White Peak and the Cheshire part of the Peak. This guide includes routes, which vary in length and difficulty and in type of country covered to suit all moods and abilities.
Roger Redfern paints a broad canvas to include areas beyond the heart of Peakland, as well as the heart of the region, and gives clear instructions to guide the user. Introductory chapters describe areas well loved and known by the author. Sixteen routes follow, punctuated with fascinating points of interest along the route - standing stones, springs, cruck barns and chapels. This is a guide for those who are prepared, and like, to use their legs to achieve the thrill and satisfaction of discovery. The routes vary in length and difficulty and in type of country covered to suit all moods and abilities, from 6-mile walks through pastoral country to 42 miles over the wildest uplands. Dovedale, Monsal dale and Kinder Scout are justly famous, but they are but a small fraction of these southern Pennines.

Roger Redfern is a well-known muntaineer and photo-journalist whose articles appear regularly in publications including High, The Great Outdoors, Peak District magazine, Peakland Walker and The Guardian. A founder tutor of the former Mountaineering Association, he has climbed all over Britain and the Alps, and in Africa and the north-eastern United States. A former editor of the mountaineering magazine Mountain Craft (later Mountain) he has written some 30 other books and guides.
