Lost Lakeland

Thomas Pennant was an eighteenth-century travel writer, antiquary and naturalist. He left Chester near his home in Wales on the 18th of May 1772 and made his way north via Lancaster and Carlisle. Travelling on horseback with a group of friends and servants including his own artist, he was one of the first to explore the Lake Counties. It was a critical time in the literary history of the region: before the Picturesque, before the Romantic poets and before the railways and mass tourism. This book follows Thomas Pennant's historic journey. It revisits what has become familiar ground and in the process discovers a 'lost' Lakeland.
