The world is a very different place now to how it was when the last edition of this Guide
was published.
At the time of writing, with a second wave of COVID-19 sweeping across Europe, it is
clear that a quick return to normality will not be possible and that we will be living with
the virus, and its effects on society and commerce, for some time.
As a result, the real estate sector is struggling not just to navigate the constantly evolving
local restrictions and guidance designed to stem the spread of the virus, but to understand
and plan for the longer term implications for the sector.
As those longer term implications become more apparent, local real estate laws and
practice will no doubt evolve to reflect and regulate whatever a post-pandemic real
estate market might look like. As they do, future editions of this Guide will faithfully
report on the laws and practice across the 20 jurisdictions it covers.
For this edition of the Guide, we have addressed the impact of COVID-19 on the real
estate sector for each jurisdiction with an additional section. This section seeks to identify
the principal changes to the laws that govern real estate introduced in reaction to
the effects of the virus.
By doing so, we hope that this Guide will continue to serve as a useful reference point
for those embarking on domestic or cross-border real estate transactions in what are
truly unprecedented times.
