A brief understanding is needed to know the salt tolerance behavior of artificially propagated salt-sensitive mangrove plants. Both morphological and molecular techniques are imperative for re-establishment of vegetatively propagated salt-sensitive mangroves like Excoecaria agallocha and Cerbera manghas in their wild habitat. This research work is aimed at evaluation of salt-tolerant behaviour of vegetatively propagated E. agallocha and C. manghas through analysis of relevant morphological and molecular attributes including antioxidant activities at different stages of salt (NaCl) stress during their hardening period under captive conditions to facilitate salinity-specific field establishment & re-introduction in the wild. Vegetative propagation of E. agallocha followed by salt acclimatization in shade net house conditions and its reintroduction in denuded native area may be more practical in all kinds of salinity regimes. Whereas, C. manghas can be established up to moderate salinity region of the mangrove ecosystems. The data generated in this research will facilitate further course of research on successful re-establishment of other salt-sensitive mangrove species in the wild.
Maharana, Pradeep Kumar I, Pradeep Kumar Maharana, have more than four years research experience on mangroves (vegetative propagation and its biochemical analysis) and graduated with my PhD degree (Biotechnology) on mangroves in 2019 from Utkal University, Odisha, India. Currently, I am working as biology faculty of a private college in Odisha.
