The Larynx

Marvin Fried, M.D., F.A.C.S. Marvin P. Fried, M.D. is a New York native, and graduate of City College of New York 1965. He received the New York City Jonas Salk Award and Scholarship from New York City College. He graduated Tufts University School of Medicine in 1969, followed by training in Otolaryngology at Washington University School of Medicine, where he also served as a Fellow of the National Institute of Neurologic Disease and Stroke. After serving in the United States Public Health Service in Norfolk, Virginia at the rank of Surgeon (Commander), his first faculty appointment was at Boston University School of Medicine and Tufts University School of Medicine. In 1979, he joined the Harvard Medical School faculty, being promoted ultimately to Professor of Otology and Laryngology in 1997. He served as Chief of the Divisions of Otolaryngology at the Brigham and Women's Hospital, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, and Co-Director of the Head and Neck Oncology Program at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. In 1999, he became Professor of Otolaryngology and University Chairman, Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Montefiore Medical Center. He also has served as the Program Director for the Otolaryngology Residency Program at Harvard Medical Center, and now at AECOM. His awards include first place award for Basic Research in Otolaryngology as a Resident from the American Academy of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology (1975), the Edmund Prince Fowler Award for Basic Science Research from the American Laryngological, Rhinological, and Otological Society (Triologic Society) 1984, the Honor Award of the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery 1988, and the Mark Award for Contributions to the Advancement of Laser Medicine and Surgery in 1994 from the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery. He received the Medal of the City of Paris in 1987 for the First International Medical Symposium offered by Harvard Medical School. He has been listed in the Best Doctors in America; Best Doctors in New York (Castle Connolly Medical LTD), as well as in "New York's Top 100 Minimally Invasive Surgeons," and "New York's Best Doctors" (New York Magazine). Dr. Fried has had numerous national positions, including member of the Audit Committee of the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Foundation, as well as Chairman of its Laser Safety Committee. He has been President of the Society of University Otolaryngologists-Head and Neck Surgeons, and the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery. He is Secretary of the American Rhinologic Society, and the American Laryngological Association. He has also served on numerous committees for other organizations, such as, the American Society for Head and Neck Surgery, and the American Broncho-Esophagological Association. Dr. Fried is on the Editorial Board of The Archives of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, The Laryngoscope, Ear Nose and Throat Journal, The Journal of Clinical Laser Medicine and Surgery, Lasers in Surgery and Medicine, and The Annales d'Oto-Laryngologie et de Chirurgie Cervico Faciale. He is also a manuscript reviewer for a number of other journals. His research interests have been and remain in the realm of technical applications for the improvement of surgery as it relates to disorders of the head and neck. This has included laser applications and safety, computer-assisted and image-guided surgery, and surgical simulation. He has been the principal investigator on grants issues by the Department of Defense, as well as current investigator from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. His research contributions have included investigations onto safe laser practices for disorders of the head and neck, investigations into microvascular reconstruction, including laser tissue welding, image guidance for photothermal treatment with lasers, and virtual endoscopy. He is currently investigating the use of sophisticated surgical simulation for training of residents and physicians for endoscopic sinus surgery and its relationship to the improvement of patient safety. He has authored over 150 original reports, reviews, and chapters, as well as books and monographs. He has been the Senior Editor of two editions of a definitive textbook on laryngeal disorders. Alfio Ferlito, M.D. Alfio Ferlito, M.D. is Director of the Department of Surgical Sciences, Professor and Chairman of the ENT Clinic at the University of Udine School of Medicine. He graduated in medicine at the University of Bologna. After two years at the University of Trieste, he worked at the ENT Department of Padua University from 1970 to 1997. He has collaborated in writing articles, editorials, commentaries, letters to the editor, special issues, book chapters and books with 323 international experts. He has edited a three-volume book entitled Cancer of the Larynx (CRC Press, Boca Raton, 1985) and three other books entitled Neoplasms of the Larynx (Churchill Livingstone, Edinburgh, 1993), Surgical Pathology of Laryngeal Neoplasms (Chapman and Hall, London, 1996) and Diseases of the Larynx (Arnold, London, 2000), and co-authored two books entitled Granulomas and Neoplasms of the Larynx (Churchill Livingstone, Edinburgh, 1988) and Surgery for Cancer of the Larynx and Related Structures together with Dr. Carl E. Silver (Saunders, Philadelphia, 1996). He is editor with Dr. Marvin P. Fried of The Larynx (Plural Publishing). He has been the author or co-author of 383 refereed publications in 46 medical journals and 48 chapters in various books.
