Bleeding and clotting problems have traditionally been treated by haematologists and the emphasis has formerly been on life-threatening haemorrhagic disorders. Now problems of bleeding and clotting have moved into the field of the cardiologist, as the two specialties move closer together in the area of vascular medicine. The emphasis of this text is on thrombosis (clotting) and fibrinolysis (the dissolution of blood clots).
