This follow-on on volume of "Focus on Child Abuse", published in 1989, is another collection of papers by major figures. The issue remains just as contentious, the number of troubling cases is, if anything, larger. Since 1989 there have been seen several major inquiries, including Orkney, Pindown in Staffordshire and Leicestershire. Lord Clyde's Orkney report (1992) could be called Cleveland revisited - poor judgement, worse treatment, few lessons learned. This collection of 15 papers is an important contribution to a vital and high-profile debate. Contributors include: Dame Elizabeth Butler-Sloss, judge in the Court of Appeal; Professor M.D.A. Freeman, Professor of English Law, University College, London; Professor Roy Meadow, Professor of Paediatrics and Child Health, St James's University Hospital, Leeds.
Child abuse - the approach of the court, Dame Elizabeth Butler-Sloss; legislating for child abuse - the Children Act and Significant Harm, M.D.A. Freeman; medical management of abused children and their families, Frank Bamford; child sexual abuse, family life and the Children Act, Margery Bray; the criminal process and the child witness in sexual abuse cases, Michael Lawson; beyond child abuse - a child's right to physical integrity, Peter Newell; Munchausen syndrome by proxy, Roy Meadow; allegations of child abuse - the role of the medical examiner, Peter Dean; social work perspectives, Peter Smith; the NSPCC in the 1990s, Barbara Joel-Esam; the offical solicitor in child abuse cases, Michael Hinchliffe; child abuse - a police perspective, Susan Hall; interviewing children - psychiatric aspects, Stephen Wolkind; the child's solicitor in child protectiohn proceedings, John Ellison; children with disabilities and special needs - current issues regarding child protection, Philippa Russell.
