Understanding Human Development 3rd edition introduces the reader to some of the core theoretical understandings of human development and behaviour, relevant to social work and human services students. It draws from the vast body of research and literature, as well as from the research and literature from more adversity-focused areas of trauma and loss. This book advocates a multidimensional approach to understanding the complexities of human behaviour and development across the lifespan; that is, an approach that simultaneously considers the realities of people's inner and outer worlds.
Louise Harms is the Chair and Head of the Department of Social Work at The University of Melbourne. She worked as a social worker for nine years in hospital and educational settings, before moving into her social work academic appointment at The University of Melbourne in 2001. Her research and teaching interests are in the areas of trauma and resilience, particularly in health and post-disaster contexts, as well as in social work education.
