Often people hear myths about orthodontics from their friends or family and accept them as facts. Maybe they’ve heard that adults can’t get braces, or that they’ll have to wear the same bulky, metal braces that were popular decades ago. Maybe they’re afraid that braces will cause them pain during treatment. However, like all medicine, orthodontics have come a long way.
Dr. Thais Booms and Dr. Kelly Giannetti wrote Beyond Braces: A Consumer’s Guide to Orthodontics to dispel the myths and rumors about orthodontics. In this book, you’ll learn how everything about how orthodontics work in today’s world, including: •how your bite was formed and why it matters, •what preventative treatment is available for children, •how orthodontics help snoring and sleep apnea, and •the different type of treatments available for adults.
If you’ve ever been on the fence about orthodontic treatment for you or your child, don’t hesitate to learn how your life can be changed—pain free!
DR. KELLY GIANNETTI grew up in the Central Valley of California. As a child of teachers, she developed a love for education. She graduated from UC Davis with a BS in physiology and moved to Boston for her next adventure in dental school. In 1995, she graduated from Harvard University with a doctorate in dental medicine and a master’s in public health. She furthered her orthodontic specialty education with a master’s in oral biology at the University of California at San Francisco. After graduating in 1998, Dr. Giannetti moved to Sacramento, California to be near her family. In addition to her private practice, Dr. Giannetti is the director of the Orthodontic Assisting Program at the FADE Institute and guest lecturer at UCSF Orthodontic Department. Her passion for dentistry, learning, and travelling takes her to all corners of the world where she collaborates with other health care providers to bring a unique perspective to her practice. Dr. Giannetti met her husband, Stephen, in 1986 at UC Davis. Stephen is a fine art painter whose paintings inspired the practice logo and are on display in the office. They have two girls, Maya and Isabella. Maya is currently in dental school at UCLA and hopes to join Dr. Giannetti and Dr. Booms after graduation. Isabella is a freshman in college. DR. THAIS BOOMS grew up in Brazil with her five siblings (four boys). Growing up, she was always fascinated with physics and biology—her father was an engineering professor and her mom a biology professor. During her training in dental school, she realized orthodontics was a combination of physics and biology and she knew then she had found what she could be forever passionate about. While attending dental school in Brazil, Dr. Booms was always reading about orthodontics and her favorite author was a professor at the University of Michigan. Her goal became to study orthodontics at the University of Michigan and that is where she attended her three-year residency, graduating with her master’s of science in orthodontics in 2001. After graduation, Dr. Booms served as an associate professor at the University of Michigan. While in Michigan, Dr. Booms met her husband, Christopher. They relocated to Sacramento, California in 2006 in search of similar weather to Dr. Booms’ hometown in Brazil (being from Michigan, Chris has been a trooper adapting to Sacramento’ summers). They have two kids—Enzo and Lia—who keep them amazed and on their toes. Dr. Booms and Chris chose Sacramento because of its outdoors opportunities—with their kids, they love camping, hiking, biking, paddle boarding and finding new swim holes in the Sierras. Dr. Booms enjoys being a part of the community where she practices and loves seeing many familiar faces at the office.
