It is well known that the inbred NOD (non-obese diabetic) mouse is one of the excellent animal models for the study of insulin dependent diabetes in human subjects, with the NON (non-obese non-diabetic) mouse being selected only as the control strain. However, NON mice were found to show a defect in glucose tolerance and abnormality of the renal glomerulus, with further investigations suggesting that this strain may become a suitable animal model for either insulin dependent diabetes or renal dysfunction. This volume summarizes the reports on studies using NON mice in the first few years, reflecting the excellent fruition of the research within this field.

List of Contributors. Preface. I. Breeding and Genetics. 1. Breeding of the NON mouse and its characteristics (S. Makino et al.). 2. Biological characteristics of the NOD mouse, a related strain of the NON mouse (M. Harada, S. Makino). 3. Analysis of the insulin genes in the NON mouse (S. Ohgaku, T. Sawa). II. The NON Mouse as an Animal Model for Type II Diabetes Mellitus. 4. Diabetic syndrome in the NON mouse (G. Hasegawa et al.). 5. Body fat accumulation and metabolic disturbance in the NON mouse (M. Hata et al.). 6. Cytoplasmic Ca 2+ response in pancreatic beta cells of the NON mouse (K. Tsuji et al.). 7. Changes of the K + channel of the pancreatic B cell in the NON mouse (T. Taminato et al.). 8. Lipoproteins, cholesterol and bile acids in the NON mouse (K. Uchida et al.). 9. Intranuclear filaments in the pancreatic B cells and abnormal glucose tolerance in the NON mouse (K. Yamamoto et al.). III. Characteristics of the Nephropathy in the NON Mouse. 10. Histopathological observation of the development of glomerular intracapillary deposits in the NON mouse (Y. Muraoka et al.). 11. Cell infiltration in various organs and dilation of the urinary tubule in the NON mouse (K. Tanigawa et al.). 12. Immunopathological observations of nephropathy and characterization of infiltrated lymphocytes (Y. Watanabe et al.). 13. Renal pathological findings and abnormal GTT (H. Wainai et al.). 14. Renal lesions and urinary bladder carcinogenesis (S. Mori et al.). Subject Index.
