This book provides a basic understanding of adaptive control and its applications in Flight control. It also discusses control methodologies and the application of control techniques which will help practicing flight control and active flow control researchers.
This book provides a basic understanding of adaptive control and its applications in Flight control. It discusses the designing of an adaptive feedback control system and analyzes this for flight control of linear and nonlinear aircraft models using synthetic jet actuators. It also discusses control methodologies and the application of control techniques which will help practicing flight control and active flow control researchers. It also covers modelling and control designs which will also benefit researchers from the background of fluid mechanics and health management of actuation systems.

The unique feature of this book is characterization of synthetic jet actuator nonlinearities over a wide range of angles of attack, an adaptive compensation scheme for such nonlinearities, and a systematic framework for feedback control of aircraft dynamics with synthetic jet actuators.

Dipankar Deb is currently Associate Professor in Department of Electrical Engineering at Institute of Infrastructure Technology, Research and Management, Ahmedabad, India. He holds B.E. degree from National Institute of Technology, Karnataka, M.S. degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from University of Florida, Gainesville, and Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering. He is Senior Member of IEEE. He has filed and published 6 US Patents and 25 Indian Patents, apart from 50 research articles in International Journals and Conferences. He has wide experience in academia and industry both in the USA and India. His research interest includes adaptive control, active flow control, renewable energy, smart infrastructure, and bio-medical control applications. He has published a book with Springer in 2018 Engineering Research Methodology and edited two other books with Springer, Innovations in Infrastructure, and Innovative Research in Transportation Infrastructure. Jason Burkholderreceived his Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Virginia in 2010, M.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Virginia in 1997, and B.S. in Systems Engineering from the United States Naval Academy in 1995. His dissertation involved the design of adaptive diagnostic algorithms that tolerate changing system dynamics during the normal equipment aging process while maintaining fault sensitivity. From 1998 to 2003, he worked for Sperry Marine, a unit of Northrop Grumman Systems Corporation. In December 2001, Dr. Burkholder received the Sperry Marine Engineering Excellence Award, an annual award recognizing the Company's outstanding young engineer. He then also worked with Barron Associates. He has led numerous projects, including the 3D corrosion mapping system and hot corrosion projects described in the related work section. Additional projects led by Dr. Burkholder include: the development and simulation of fault detection and isolation schemes for marine diesel engines; the development and simulation of advanced high-speed algorithms for detection and isolation of faults in zonal, grounded shipboard electrical power systems; the development and simulation of optimization algorithms for reconfigurable shipboard electrical power systems; the design and simulation of a physical arrangement and a control system for permanent magnet motor steering gear; the design and implementation of adaptive control algorithms to achieve active flow control objectives using synthetic jet actuators; the design of prognostic health monitoring algorithms specifically designed for dynamic operating conditions; the design of an autonomous health monitoring system for hybrid propulsion military vehicles; a software tool for analysing freeplay-induced aero-servo-elastic flutter; the design of adaptive diagnostic algorithms that tolerate changing system dynamics during the equipment aging process while maintaining fault sensitivity; a fuel usage monitor andeconomizer for heavy trucks; and an adaptive inverse control approach for diesel engine inter-cylinder output balancing. Gang Tao has worked in various areas from more than 30 years. Some of these are adaptive control theory and applications, with particular interests in adaptive control of systems with multiple inputs and multiple outputs, systems with non-smooth nonlinearities, systems with uncertain faults, in stability and robustness of adaptive control systems, and in passivity characterizations of control systems. His publications include the 2003 Wiley textbook "Adaptive Control Design and Analysis", the 1996 Wiley book "Adaptive Control of Systems with Actuator and Sensor Nonlinearities", the 2004 Springer book "Adaptive Control of Systems with Actuator Failures", the 2003 Springer book "Control of Sandwich Nonlinear Systems", the 2001 Springer book "Adaptive Control of Nonsmooth Dynamic Systems", the 2009 book "Advances in Control Systems Theory and Applications", and over 400 technical papers and book chapters. Recently, he has been working on adaptive control of systems with uncertain actuator failures and actuator nonlinearities, structural damage, sensor uncertainties and failures, dynamics mutation, on adaptive approximation control of non-canonical form nonlinear systems, on intelligent and adaptive learning systems, on resilient robot control, high-speed train control, aircraft and spacecraft flight control, and renewable energy system control applications. He is Associate Editor for Automatica and Subject Editor for International Journal of Adaptive Control and Signal Processing (for which he was Guest Editor for a 1997 special issue on Adaptive Systems with Nonsmooth Nonlinearities). He was Associate Editor for IEEE Trans. on Automatic Control from 1996 to 1999. He organized and chaired the 2001 International Symposium on Adaptive and Intelligent Systems and Control, held in Charlottesville, Virginia, and organizedinvited sessions for 1996 IEEE CDC and 1999 IEEE CCA on adaptive control of systems with nonsmooth nonlinearities. He served on numerous international conferences' technical and advisory committees and as Technical Conference Chair for IEEE SoutheastCon 2007. He was Plenary Speaker at the 2011 SIAM SEAS, the 2011 Chinese Safeprocess Conference, and the 2016 IEEE Chinese Guidance, Navigation and Control Conference, and Keynote Speaker at the 2013 IEEE Conference on Industrial Electronics and Applications. He is Fellow of IEEE.
