It discusses key aspects of each program and provides tips on how to install and use the software. The book is packaged with a CD which contains the source code for most of the programs addressed in the book. The authors show how to locate source code for other programs on the Internet. The first chapter shows how to connect to the Internet to locate software available. Readers can learn how to communicate with the authors of the free software, using the Internet. The second chapter provides a hacker's guide to installing Internet software. Subsequent chapters are devoted to the best free UNIX programs, including information on location of the software, the author, and restrictions plus tips on using the software. Chapters are organized by category of software: word processing, games, communication, printing, and spreadsheet. Other categories include software development utilities, graphic utilities, electronic mail, programming languages and general utility software.
