This has been written as a text in experimental design for first-year graduate students in statistics, and graduate students in other fields. It provides complete theoretical background in great detail, and full treatment of the principles and premises of experimental design.
Of the many areas in which statisticians and scientists must combine their knowledge, none is more important than the design and analysis of experiments. There is a direct relationship between the quality of experimental design and analysis and the validity of conclusions drawn from experimental results. Design and Analysis of Experiments is the first of two volumes that update Oscar Kempthorne's groundbreaking 1952 classic of the same name. This first volume establishes both the philosophical basis for experimental design and a mathematical-statistical framework within which to discuss the subject. A sharp distinction is drawn between observation studies and the intervention studies that are the primary topic of this book. A thorough discussion of linear models provides the basic tools of analysis for intervention studies. At the heart of the book is a series of error-control designs based on fundamental design principles such as randomization, blocking, the Latin square principle, the split-unit principle, and the notion of factorial treatment structure.
There are also discussions of response surface and mixture designs, and the construction of customized designs based on one or more fundamental principles. This is the ultimate textbook for a first-year graduate course in experimental design. A thorough understanding of the material covered in this book will fully prepare students to grapple with the more complex technical material presented in advanced courses in experimental design. The classic text now updated and expanded for the 1990s...Design and Analysis of Experiments is the first of a two-volume update of Oscar Kempthorne's celebrated classic of the same name. This first volume is concerned primarily with the philosophical basis for experimental design and a mathematical-statistical framework within which to discuss the subject. As the primary focus is on intervention studies, the authors begin with a thorough discussion of linear models. At the heart of the book, is a series of error-control designs based on fundamental design principles such as randomization, blocking, the Latin square principle, the split-unit principle, and the notion of factorial treatment structure.
The material covered in this book will more than prepare first-year graduate students for the challenges of more advanced courses in experimental design.

KLAUS HINKELMANN, PhD, holds a doctorate in statistics from the Iowa State University and a degree in mathematics from the University of Hamburg. Currently Professor of Statistics at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University Department of Statistics, he served as graduate administrator from 1976 -- 1982 and as department head from 1982--1993. He was a visiting professor at Iowa State University for the fall semester, 1990. Professor Hinkelmann is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association (of which he served as President of the Virginia Chapter from 1983--1984), a Member of the International Statistical Institute, a Fellow of the American Association for the Advance--ment of Science, and was a Council Member of the Biometric Society (1982--1985 and 1988--1989). He was an Associate Editor of Biometrics from 1975--1984 and the Editor from 1990--1993. OSCAR KEMPTHORNE, ScD, is Emeritus Professor of Statistics and Emeritus Distinguished Professor in Liberal Arts and Sciences at Iowa State University. He received his bachelor's, master's, and doctor of science degrees from Cambridge University and was named Honorary Doctor of Philosophy by Ioannina University in Greece. He is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association, the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Statistical Society, and a Member of the International Statistical Institute. In addition, Dr. Kempthorne is a past president of the Eastern North American Region (ENAR) of the Biometric Society, a former chairman of the Statistics Section of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and past president of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics.
