This guide to embedded Linux programming provides a thorough map of the design issues, coding responsibilities and requirements that are unique to embedded platform development. The author guides the reader through all of the necessary steps in developing their first embedded program including editing the program source code, cross compilation, target code download, host control interface, debugger use, exception handling and resource monitoring. All of the source code is provided and the examples and tools can be used immediately to provide a simple, scaleable and low-cost demonstration of an embedded application, just the tangible proof-of-concept that can establish a project for business managers. This text has been written with programmers familiar with Linux or the C language that want to use Linux in embedded development in mind.

Rob Wehrli is a software engineer with his own consulting design firm in Phoenix, Arizona. Rob has been programming for twenty-six years, and working with Linux since 1992. He regularly writes articles on programming for Linux Journal, and Software Development magazine. He is a Microsoft Certified Solution Developer, and also works with embedded Linux companies and embedded processor vendors, developing board support platforms for embedded Linux.
