Joseph Addison (1672-1719) was an eminent English essayist, poet, playwright, and politician, whose work left an indelible mark on the literature of the early 18th century. Born in Milston, Wiltshire, Addison was educated at Charterhouse and at Oxford where he excelled in classics.
