Creating homes around client stories is the exact opposite of what Grace was told to do when breaking into the design world. “Pick a style, stick to it, and repeat it over and over”, a respected mentor once told her. Instinctually, this felt wrong. Grace's desire for people to feel seen and heard, a desire likely stemming from being bullied as a child, was too strong to enact a rinse and repeat version of design. When her husband gifted her a notebook and photo album inscribed with "Show others your Storied Style” on the inside cover, her fate was sealed. Grace has now made it her mission to show people their story can and should complete their home.
Since the premiere of her first television show, Grace has received thousands of emails and messages from people wondering how their stories would translate to their home. This book is the answer to those queries. Taking the reader through seven important questions to ask themselves, Grace showcases her exact design process to put together a home reflective of the people living in it. Over twenty thoughtfully photographed projects, some favorites and some never-before-seen reveals (including Grace’s own home & garden!), are featured throughout the book to showcase how answering the seven questions leads to a home that is uniquely yours.
In a busy world, taking a moment to slow down and reflect on your life can be difficult. Grace's simple process, along with heartfelt stories of people whose lives have been changed by following her steps, will motivate you to get started. Using your story to dictate the style of your home enables you to not only share yourself in a new way with visitors, it also helps break the expensive cycle of fashioning your home around trends. Your abode can be interesting, beautiful, timeless, and best of all, memorable, by centering it around you.
Creating homes around client stories is the exact opposite of what Grace Mitchell was told to do when breaking into the design world. “Pick a style, stick to it, and repeat it over and over”, a respected mentor once told her. Instinctually, this felt wrong. The desire within her for people to feel seen and heard, a desire likely stemming from life experiences such as being horribly bullied as a child, was too strong to enact a rinse and repeat version of design. When her husband gifted her a notebook and photo album inscribed with ‘Show others your Storied Style” on the inside cover, her fate was sealed. Grace has now made it her mission to show people that their story can and should complete their home.

Grace Mitchell’s fun, unexpected and personalized room designs tell each homeowner’s unique story in HGTV’s One of a Kind. The home renovator and interior designer creates eclectic, imaginative spaces that illustrate the spirit of those who live there. While Grace relished using her training as a language therapist for deaf and hard of hearing babies for several years, she knew her real passion was construction, design and creating storybook homes for clients. After a stint in selling vintage furniture, she turned to design and style writing and eventually began her interior design business, Storied Style Interiors, in 2012. Her work has been featured in prestigious home décor publications including Better Homes & Gardens, Southern Living, House Beautiful, Elle Décor, Domino Magazine,Vintage Remade Magazine, Do-It-Yourself Magazine, as well as The Boston Globe. She currently resides in Fort Worth, Texas, in a 100-year-old “always has a project” house, with her husband, Kent, and four small children.
