The Announcement

The Annunciation: a specific event recounted in the Bible and often represented in artworks, but also the prototype of many other announcements throughout the history of Western culture. This volume proposes new readings of pictorial Annunciations as well as analyses of some visual echoes that reenact the announcement to Mary in sacred and profane contexts. The objects of study range from the early Middle Ages to the present day. Die Verkündigung Jesu ist ein häufig ins Bild gesetztes biblisches Sujet und vorbildhaft für die Darstellung anderer Szenen. Der Band untersucht mittelalterliche und frühneuzeitliche Umsetzungen dieses Bildthemas sowie die kulturellen Reflexionen im sakralen und profanen Kontext bis ins 21. Jh.: etwa in Wandgemälden zur Glorifizierung der Republik Venedig, in Filmen von Jean-Luc Godard und Lars von Trier oder in der Videokunst Eija-Liisa Ahtilas.
